About Ocracoke Island
Often referred to as the “Pearl of the Outer Banks”, Ocracoke Island is graced with 17 miles of pristine beach that is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and was ranked the number one beach in the United States in 2007. The National Park Service, except for Ocracoke Village, owns the entire island. Once home to Blackbeard the Pirate and the site of his final battle and mortal defeat in 1718, some tourists hope to stumble across Blackbeard’s buried treasure. Little do they know that our pristine beach is the real treasure of this island paradise. Located towards the southern tip of the island, Ocracoke Village surrounds Silver Lake harbor and is lined with restaurants, gift shops, and water sport activities. Quaint tree-lined shady lanes branching off the main thoroughfare make Ocracoke Village easy to explore on bicycle or on foot.
